The name centipede means,”100 legs”. The heads of centipedes have a pair of long Antennae. They have small mouths that have large, claw like structures that contain a venom gland. Because most centipedes are carnivorous creatures that forage for food at night, they use their claws to paralyze their victims, such as spiders and small vertebrates. Centipedes range in size from 1 to 6 inches in length. The body is flattened with many body segments. House centipedes are grey-yellow in color with three stripes down the back and very long legs banded with white.
Many people are afraid when they see a centipede running rapidly around their house. They are predators of other insects and we should take comfort in that populations of other insects are being controlled. But centipedes are really creepy and are not dangerous to humans. In some reports bites can be dangerous to small children and those with allergies to bee stings. Bites from larger centipedes have been known to induce anaphylactic shock in some people. .Mostly centipedes do not puncture the human skin.
The female centipede will use several locations to leave their eggs to hatch in clumps of between 10 to 60 eggs, leaving them to fend for themselves. After hatching from an egg, they will become a larva. After molting, the legs will develop. They hide in damp areas around basements and washrooms and other sites typically where other pests are found.
Centipedes are carnivorous and prey on insects, spiders, including other centipedes. Centipedes can consume plants if they are not able to locate their main food sources.
