Carpenter Bees Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Carpenter Bees can be answered below. If you require any additional information not listed below, please feel free to Contact the Pros at Pro Pest – Call 416-487-4179.

Adult carpenter bees are large (3/4 to 1 inch long) and resemble bumble bees except that the abdomen is hairless and shiny black. The carpenter bees are much smaller (1/4 inch) and are dark bluish-green, and make nests in plant stems.

They prefer unfinished softwoods such as cedar and pine in structures for constructing nests. Carpenter bees do not consume wood like termites, but use wood to construct nests. Carpenter bees pollinate flowers and they gather nectar and pollen.

Adult Carpenter Bees spend the winter in nests constructed the previous year, and become active in April or May. After mating, females construct new tunnels for nesting or they use pre-existing tunnels. Tunnels are about 1/2 inch wide and start on the end of wooden beams or at right angles to a surface for 1/2 to 1 inch before turning and with the wood grain. Tunnels are clean cut and may extend 5 to 10 inches. Females collect nectar and pollen to produce a mass called “bee bread.”The eggs hatch into larvae which feed on the bee bread. Their development varies with the temperature, but can grow from egg to adult in as little as a month. There may be two or three generations per year. Adults emerging in late summer or fall do not mate until spring but may gather and store pollen in their tunnels.

Adult female carpenter bees can sting, most carpenter bees can attack people passing by nesting sites because they are territorial males, but they are incapable of stinging. Structural damage produced by nest making can be damaging to wood siding on homes, garages, fences and other buildings, the damage is mostly cosmetic unless nesting sites are used repeatedly over years.

Carpenter bees don’t consume wood like termites, but use wood to construct nests. The worker bees gather both nectar and pollen from flowers to feed to the larvae and other colony members.
